This morning when we got to our classroom strange things had appeared overnight. Our teacher (Codename Golden Magpie) explained to us that we had an emergency situation going on and we had all been recruited as Secret Agents to help solve the mystery and find Purple Monkey's secure location.
What followed was a day filled with problem solving, science, maths, reading, collaboration, code cracking and extreme fun! We had the best time working together in our secret agent squads to solve the mystery and at the end of the clues we safely uncovered Purple Monkey ( More commonly known as Mrs Fox our Deputy Principal!).
Check us out in action on the slideshow below and have fun creating your own Secret Agent Code name - We certainly did!

Literacy Day - Buddy Classes
On Monday 25th November we celebrated the start of our Book Fair week with a Literacy Day. The whole school got together in Buddy Classes and had some fun based around a famous book. WE chose to use the book Oh The Places You'll Go by Dr Suess. These were our instruction slides and together we produced a collaborative piece of art.

Illustrators are amazing!
This week we were lucky enough to have an amazing Duffy Role model come to visit our school. Toby Morris was our Role model this term. He is an illustrator and author. You may have seen his work on the front of the Edmonds Cornflour boxes or in some of our School Journals! Have a look at the photos below of our fantastic assembly.

Welcome to Tuhi Mai Tuhi Atu
Room 12 is taking part in Tuhi Mai Tuhi Atu. This is where we interact with a buddy class from another school in New Zealand. We are lucky enough to have been given a buddy class from Kaniere School in Hokitika.
We enjoy enjoy taking part in our Cybersmart lessons with Mrs Cameron and have been learning all about how to post to our learning blogs. We can't wait to interact with our new buddies and share our learning on our blogs. Although we are very far away from each other in physical distance we look forward to meeting you Ruma Tui!
Have a look at how far we would have to travel to visit Ruma Tui at Kaniere School...... Just a little bit too far for a school trip!

Sorting the Comments
Today in Cybersmart with Mrs Cameron we learnt about sorting blog comments. We looked at some comments and decided if they were positive or negative comments. To do this work we worked alongside a buddy on a collaborative document.
This task was made easier because we got to work in pairs and make changes on the same document at the same time. Have you ever done collaborative work in your class?

Array City
In maths we have been learning about using arrays to help us when solving multiplication problems.
We are exploring this through making array buildings which will all get put together to create an array city.
Here we are hard at work:
When we are done our array city will be up on display in our classroom, please pop in and have a look!

Our group expectations.
We have been working together to come up with our class expectations when working as a group. Have a look at what we have come up with.
Collaborative math expectations and group norms
Collaborative math expectations and group norms
How do we work as a group?
Respect each other, listen to each other
share/take turns
Look after each other as a family - if someone falls down with their maths we help pick them up like we would our little brother if he fell down
How do we take care of our learning?
Be drivers not passengers
Take risks
Don’t give up (you are going to get stuck but it’s how you get unstuck that matters)
Ask questions - if you don't understand you need to ask questions, can't expect them to just explain everything
How do we share our thinking?
Using a loud voice
Using the word because
Asking if people have questions.
Are there any other ways that you find help you to work together productively in a group?

Our tips for quality comments.
Today in our Cybersmart lesson with Mrs Cameron we were learning about how to comment in a helpful and thoughtful way.
I really enjoyed this lesson because we got to use a new website to create our own comic strips. It was fun and an easy website to use.
Do you have any tips that you use when you are posting a comment?

Autumn
We are well and truly in the midst of Autumn. Here at school we have been making the most of the abundance of leaves outside our classroom. We have been creating leaf piles and crunching through the leaves with our friends during breaks. We have also been using the leaves in class for our art. We created portraits of ourselves using leaves for our hair! To go along with our portraits we created diamante poems about Autumn.
Check out our finished work!

Our Digital Footprint
As part of our Cyber Smart lessons we have been learning about the trail that we leave behind online. We have been talking about making Cyber Smart decisions so that we keep ourselves safe. As a class we looked at what steps to undertake before we post anything online.

Hiwi the Kiwi
On Monday May 6th we were lucky enough to have the Minstrel and his wife visit our school. They came to teach us about the importance of fishing for the future and looking after ourselves on the water.
The Minstrel sang songs about these messages and lots of people won prizes for answering questions correctly.
Have a look at some of the photos from the show. If you want to know more or want to have a listen to the songs from the show you can access these on the following link.

Duffy Role Model
Earlier this week we were lucky enough to have Denzel Laumatia come to our school. He spoke to us about how he found his passion for reading when he was in primary school.
Denzel was really interesting to listen to and he has been able to achieve lots of great things so far in his life.
We are really grateful to have the Duffy books given to us to read especially as they are just in time for our holiday!

Our T Shirt Designs
We have been working on T Shirt designs that reflect our personalities with our Digital facilitators. Have a look at how some of them turned out.
Lesson in progress.
We have loved having Mrs Cameron and Miss G in our class for this term. They come in once a week and work with us to grow our skills on our Chromebooks. We have had so much fun creating new posters and Google Drawings demonstrating our new skills. Here are some photos of us in action.

Digital Art
Yesterday with Miss G and Mrs Cameron we used our Chromebooks to create art!
It was really tricky at first although we all had great fun once we got used to what we were doing.
First we took photos with our Chromebooks then used Google Drawing to create shapes. The finished products are very cool. We have decided to call them our Pop Art Portraits.

CyberSmart
We have been learning about how to use Google Drawing. We used this app to make a poster all about ourselves. We also had to be mindful of being Cyber Smart at the same time! We looked at different images using Google Images and learnt how to use the tools to ensure we are using images that are available for use. We also learnt how to take a photo using our Chromebooks!

Metaphors and Similies
Earlier in the year we worked as a class on getting to know each other better. As part of this we wrote similies or metaphors about ourselves. Here are just a few examples of our final products.
Kawa of Care
As part of our Kawa of Care we have been learning all about how to take good care of our Chromebooks. Mrs Cameron and Miss G came in to talk to us about how important it is to take care of our Chromebooks so that they can work properly.
We discussed ways in which we carry our equipment, safe places to put it and how to pass the Chromebooks to each other. Part of our task was then to create a poster showcasing our new knowledge. Please see a few pieces of our work below, if you want to see us illustrating examples of how to handle our Chromebooks please visit our class site.
